6 Screen-Free Evening Games for Siblings (That Require Zero Toys)

No toys, no screens, and zero prep required—just a little floor space and a lot of imagination.

By eight o’clock, right after my 8-year-old son finishes his homework, our house fills up with laughter. Some nights it’s my two kids singing songs with words that make absolutely no sense.

Other nights it’s just a chorus of “vroom, vroom!” bouncing off the walls. My husband responds the same way almost every time, covering his ears and groaning, “Ouch, my ears are falling off!”

If you’re looking for easy, no-equipment indoor games for siblings to play at night—games that use nothing but a bit of space and a lot of imagination—here are the six we come back to almost every evening in our own home.

None of them need toys, screens, or anything you don’t already have sitting in the living room.

    1. The Hand Game (Pao)

This is the one that gets them laughing so hard I usually end up laughing too, even watching from across the room.

A young boy and his younger sister sitting on a bed, facing each other and playing a traditional hand game called Pao.
Demonstrating the “vanishing fingers” trick that always makes them laugh during Game 1.

They sit facing each other on the floor tiles or the bed and start playing a simple hand game. What really sets them off is when my son hides his fingers behind his back and pretends they’ve vanished.

My daughter always asks, “Na Na?” which means “where is the hand?” and searches for it with her eyes wide open, trying hard not to giggle.

It’s one of those easy games for siblings to play together that needs nothing but two pairs of hands and a little patience.

    2. Singing Together

This is the game that makes the whole house feel alive. In about thirty seconds, my kids can somehow work their way through five or ten songs, one right after another.

As for the actual words? Don’t try too hard to make sense of them, because even I can’t always tell what they’re singing.

Sometimes they’ll grab a rolled-up piece of paper and hold it like a microphone, which somehow makes the whole performance even louder.

Two children, a boy and a girl, standing on a bed holding paper rolls as microphones and singing together at night.
Ready for their evening performance using paper microphones (Game 2).

    3. Playing “Motorbike”

This one is probably their favorite. On the right night, they’ll drag their dad onto the bed, climb onto his back, and go for a ride.

You’ll hear “Vroom, vroom, go, go, go… stop, stop, stop! Turn right!” filling the room. It’s usually right after that loud “turn right” that my husband lets out his signature line, “Ouch, my ears are falling off!” Even with all the noise, the room stays full of giggles from the kids and their dad.

    4. Dancing Together

Some evenings, my son practices the traditional Khmer dance steps he learned at school, moving carefully and trying to get each one right.

My daughter, on the other hand, dances her own way completely, with zero rhythm and zero worries about getting it right. I’ll sit nearby and gently suggest she copy her brother’s moves, but she doesn’t care one bit.

She just keeps dancing however she wants, and watching her enjoy it that freely is honestly half the fun.

A candid shot of the energetic freestyle dancing—proof that Game 4 is rarely quiet!

    5. The Whispering Game

My daughter sits very still while my son leans in close to whisper something in her ear. A second later, they both burst out laughing.

When I ask what’s so funny, they always give me the same answer: “Nothing, we’re just saying Ae-oh, Ae-oh.” Then it’s her turn to whisper back, except she doesn’t actually whisper. She just says it out loud, “Ae-oh, Ae-oh!” and they both crack up all over again.

It’s a small, calm game before bed that somehow still turns into one of the loudest laughs of the night.

An older brother leans in closely to whisper a secret to his younger sister while they both sit on a bed.
Sharing the secret “Ae-oh” whispers during Game 5.

    6. Hide and Seek (Their Occasional Favorite)

This one doesn’t happen every night, but when it does, it’s a big deal. My son stands facing the wall, counts “one, two, three,” and goes off to find his little sister. Then it’s her turn to count while he runs to hide.

I’ll be honest, she has a pretty hard time finding her big brother, but she never stops trying, and that’s what makes it fun to watch.

A young boy standing facing a white wall, closing his eyes to count while playing hide and seek.
Game 6: Ready or not, here I come!

    Final Thoughts

These six games are proof that you don’t need a shelf full of toys to keep siblings entertained at night. A little imagination, a bit of floor space, and two kids willing to be silly together go a long way.

They’re simple bonding games for siblings that turn an ordinary evening into something worth remembering.

If you’re searching for fun evening games to play with your kids, start with whichever one matches their energy tonight, and let the rest happen on its own.
